John graduated from Balliol College, University of Oxford, with a degree in Modern History, and subsequently gained an MA and a PhD in Medieval History from the University of Bristol in 2000. From 2002 to 2006 he was a Special Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Bristol. He is a Chartered Accountant with 30 years’ experience in the manufacturing industry. His past offices have included: Councillor on Bristol City Council; Trustee of Bristol Municipal Charities; Chairman of Governors, Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital; Non-executive Director, Bristol and District Health Authority and has served on the Executive Committee, National Association of Almshouses and the University of Bristol Audit Committee. He was High Sheriff of the City and County of Bristol in 2011/12. He is currently a trustee of County Priory Group and the St John Ambulance and President of Clifton College.
